Lecture videos are built for the average student, not for you

A recorded lecture is designed once and watched by thousands of students with different existing knowledge, different points of confusion and different paces. It has to pick a single speed and a single depth of explanation, which means it's simultaneously too slow for parts you already understand and too fast for the one specific point where you actually get stuck. You can pause and rewind, but the video still can't tell you which specific misunderstanding caused your confusion — it just repeats the same explanation.

The core difference is that a conversation can adapt mid-explanation

When you're taught through a conversation, you can stop the moment something doesn't make sense and ask about that exact point — not the whole topic again, just the one sentence that lost you. A good response then adjusts based on what you already said you understood earlier in the conversation, rather than restarting from a generic script. This is the same reason a good human teacher answering your specific question works better than reading the textbook chapter a second time.

This isn't an argument that lecture videos have no value — a well-made video is still an efficient way to get a structured first overview of a large topic, especially visual demonstrations like a chemistry titration or a physics setup. The difference matters most after that first exposure, when the real work of resolving confusion, filling gaps and building durable memory begins — and that's the stage where an interactive conversation with follow-up questions, worked examples tailored to what you got wrong, and immediate answers to 'why' consistently outperforms watching the same video a second time.
